Whitefly Treatment
Do these pictures look familiar? Does your plant life have similar-looking damage? You may have whitefly!
Whiteflies are a common plant pest in several parts of the US, and Florida is at the top of that list. They are about the size of a gnat and are noticeably white in color. These pesky bugs cause major damage anywhere they inhabit, from local crops, to plant life right in your backyard.
If left untreated, whiteflies can cause more than just an eyesore; they can be costly! They are capable of destroying ficus shrubs/trees, palm trees, and many other ornamental plants.
What is a whitefly?
Whiteflies are small, plant-feeding bugs that cause damage to plants by piercing the leaf and sucking out the phloem of the plant. Literally sucking the life out of the plant, the feeding results in shriveled leaves that eventually discolor and fall. These pests travel from plant to plant, and home to home, year-round.
There are over 1500 different kinds of whitefly. The most prevalent in south Florida is Ficus Whitefly, (feeds on ficus and other ornamentals), and Spiraling White fly (feeds on palms).
If left untreated, whitefly can cause a healthy plant to lose all of its leaves within 6 months. Without leaves, the plant cannot absorb sunlight, and will eventually die.
